What is Ninja Blade?
Integrated hardware and software solution designed to protect your email server from spam, viruses, spoofing, phishing and spyware attacks.
We mean it when we say 'carrier-grade'. The software used in this appliance is used by thousands of ISP's, this is not open-source 'freeware'.
Ninja Blade offers powerful inbound and outbound protection from spam, viruses, and malicious attachments, built-in disclaimers, and comprehensive rules-based email management. It has
some of the industry's best antispam and antivirus engines on the market, simply providing
a more powerful solution with less false positives than the competition at the same price or lower.
Best-of-breed Antispam and Antivirus Protection
For antispam protection, Ninja Blade includes the Cloudmark™ carrier-grade antispam engine and support for Real-time Blackhole Lists (RBLs). Using the industry's fastest and most accurate response against spam attacks, Ninja Blade provides superior spam detection against standard and image spam, phishing, and email spoofing using heuristic functionality and spam signature technology; consistently blocking over 98% of inbound and outbound spam attacks in real time with near zero false positives. Ninja Blade can be configured to delete, quarantine, add Subject line identification, or send to a custom folder.
To protect against viruses and zero-day threats, Ninja Blade offers BitDefender's Virus Bulletin-certified antivirus technology for superior email security. BitDefender's high-speed antivirus engine provides full protection against viruses, backdoors, trojans, and other malicious threats with 100% detection and blocking for in-the-wild viruses as certified by ICSA Labs and Checkmark.
Ninja Blade's email security enables easy administration with out-of-the-box settings and flexible configuration options to determine how email messages should be handled and allows you to get up and running in 15 minutes or less, while ensuring that spam and viruses are detected immediately.
Fastest, Carrier-Class MTA Available
Ninja Blade leverages MessageSystems' carrier-class MTA (Message Transfer Agent) and is capable of handling millions of unique messages per hour – the fastest on the market today. With the ability to support more than 100,000 concurrent connections per gateway, Ninja Blade is able to provide robust connection and traffic filtering to help manage performance and load balance for delivery of secure email. Even with the threat of evolving attacks such as Denial of Service (DoS) and Directory Harvest Attacks (DHA), Ninja Blade's traffic management features safeguard against unnecessary strain on your email infrastructure and provides sender reputation filters, connection rejection, DoS and DHA protection, and administrator-defined block/allow lists that help streamline email management and maximizes reliability.
Easy Deployment and Administration
Designed ‘by admins for admins', Ninja Blade's easy-to-use, advanced web-based interface enables you to install, configure and manage your entire gateway email security from any web browser. With easy setup and fast deployment, Ninja Blade can be installed and configured in minutes with a minimum of configuration effort needed. The streamlined interface has real-time and historical reporting; the ability to easily configure rules, search and handle selected quarantined messages. With real-time Active Directory and LDAP integration, Ninja Blade provides hands-off maintenance and seamlessly integrates with your existing IT infrastructure. End users can view and manage their own quarantine and settings through a web console using their existing network login if desired.
Comprehensive, Rules-based Email Management
Ninja Blade's management tools allow you to easily implement rules for both inbound and outbound email. You can create a variety of rules based on a number of email message properties such as body, sender IP, header, or subject. Also, custom rules can be written using regular expressions which allows for even more powerful filtering. You have the ability to create extensive rules that help ensure enforcement of how messages are handled based on your company's business processes and corporate messaging and security policies. Your unique rules settings will help aid in regulatory compliance and protect against unauthorized outbound email.
Global Attachment Filtering and Disclaimers
Using Ninja Blade's pre-loaded filtering lists of attachment file types for both inbound and outbound filtering, you have the ability to select varying levels of attachment filtering ranging from light to heavy with each pre-loaded list containing an expanding set of file types to filter. Additionally, with Ninja Blade's comprehensive rules-based filtering, rules can be defined for attachment filtering based on the characteristics of the attached file, keywords and phrases in message header, and other customized data rules. For example, you could allow certain users to send .exe files externally while blocking them from being received internally.
Ninja Blade also includes built-in global disclaimers for all outbound email in text or HTML formats. With the global disclaimers feature, you can add disclaimers to every email and rules can be set to enforce corporate email polices such as ‘all outbound email must have a disclaimer'.
Stable and Reliable Server Technology from Dell™
Ninja Blade appliances leverage the Dell PowerEdge™ servers, built on advanced industry-standard technology that are designed for reliable operation over long periods of time. With simple deployment, management, and maintenance, you can be sure that you are receiving a high-performance appliance that delivers value and Tier 1 quality. All Ninja Blade appliances are backed by Dell's dedicated Field Service team and include the standard 1-year warranty and Dell's Premium Support. On-site service and unit replacement are available within 4 hours of notification. Additional warranties, rail kits and redundant power supply are also available.
Flexible reporting
Ninja Blade delivers flexible reporting capabilities along with superior email security. Using a set of pre-defined reports Ninja Blade offers the ability to view reports within the interface or email reports on a scheduled basis. Reports include information at the system, group, and/or user level. You can choose reporting options to show the number of inbound mail messages scanned, number of spam deleted or marked, number of viruses intercepted, number of filters triggered, percentage of viruses by name, disclaimers used, and more.
Ninja Blade Series for Organizations of All Sizes
Sunbelt Software is dedicated to providing industry-strength email security products for organizations of all sizes. Ninja Blade 500, 1000, 2500, and 5000 appliances are easy-to-install, and are suitable for organizations with up to 5000 users and multiple domains.
The Choice Is Ninja Blade Or Barracuda
A lot of system admins asked us for an email appliance with the quality of our Ninja Email Security software product. So we decided to have a good look at that market. You told us you wanted an appliance at the Barracuda price points, but more reliable hardware and more high-end software with less false positives. So we created a 'barracuda killer' for you. Check out the specs and the prices, and draw your own conclusions. Please fill out the Request Info tab of this page to request your in-house evaluation unit.

Ninja Blade Frequently Asked Questions
+ What is the support and warranty on this appliance?
3 years on-site, 4 hour response time during normal U.S. business hours (mon-Fri, 8AM to 6 PM)
+ What is Ninja Blade?
Ninja Blade is an enterprise-class email gateway appliance built on the leading technologies available in the market. It provides full email security at the perimeter, including spam, virus and attachment filtering, disclaimers and custom rules. As an appliance, it's platform independent and ready to go with a few easy setup steps.
+ What are the differences between the Ninja Blade models?
All four models of Ninja Blade have the identical software features and functions. The only difference between the models is the level of hardware redundancy and available processing power. Choose the model that matches the size of your organization.
+ When do I need Ninja Blade instead of Ninja for Exchange?
In more complex environments, defense at the perimeter makes a whole lot of sense. Ninja for Exchange works great alone in small or medium sites where the Exchange server sits right after the gateway. In that scenario there is not a lot of bandwidth loss, and the benefits of running it ON server are significant (see our Ninja for Exchange FAQs).
If you have a non-Exchange email environment, you will need a gateway appliance like Ninja Blade (contact our sales or technical support for information on the current status of support for non-Microsoft platforms).
Larger organizations should consider both products for a true blended, multi-layer security approach. Ninja Blade has a carrier-class MTA (Message Transfer Agent) that acts as a shock absorber at the perimeter between your mail server and the Internet. With its powerful multi-layer security and filtering, Ninja Blade offloads any processing of threats from your Exchange server. However, for effective virus scanning of intra-post office email, as well as internal use of disclaimers and policy-based rules, Ninja for Exchange is the perfect complement to Ninja Blade.
+ Which third-party AV engines come with Ninja Blade and are they any good?
Currently, after a thorough evaluation of available AV-engines, we have licensed BitDefender. This is provided 'out of the box' with Ninja Blade. BitDefender was recently tested by PC Magazine and came out ON with 6 out of 6. BitDefender was also tested by PC World and emerged as their BEST BUY.
+ I already have AV covered; can I run Ninja Blade without AV?
Yes, you can. However, there is no benefit to this as it is included at no charge. We strongly recommend you keep it enabled as an extra layer of protection.
+ Where do the AV pattern updates come from - Sunbelt or directly from the AV vendor? If from Sunbelt, is there any delay between the vendor releasing updates and them being available to Ninja Blade?
AV patterns for Ninja Blade are hosted by the vendor and are pulled by Ninja Blade from the vendor as they become available. The engines themselves are pushed out by Sunbelt as they become available as part of the Ninja Blade process, after full QA testing by Sunbelt.
+ How smart is the Ninja Blade attachment filtering?
Quite smart:
- The Attachment Filter checks inbound and outbound attachments. For scanning internal attachments, you need to run Ninja for Exchange as well.
- It looks beyond many types of file extensions, delving into the actual file headers as opposed to just the file extension itself. This means that simply renaming a ".exe" file to a ".txt" will not fool the attachment filter and functions as an important zero-day attack protection.
- It is rules-based so system admins can create different settings in a very granular fashion so you have a 100% detection and removal of possible malicious attachments while at the same time allowing exceptions for outbound and internal traffic.
+ Does Ninja Blade protect my users against Phishing?
Yes, the Cloudmark spam filter has this as a built-in feature and is regularly updated.
+ I have an existing Ninja license for x mailboxes and want to expand this with y more. How does that work?
Ninja Blade has fixed maximum numbers of mailboxes supported: 500, 1000, 2500 and 5000 users depending on the model. Contact your sales representative if you exceed the sizing capacity of your Ninja Blade to discuss an upgrade.
+ What size business is the product targeted to?
Sunbelt traditionally has serviced small and medium business. Ninja Blade will run perfectly fine from 10 to 5,000 users. Contact us for larger deployments.
+ Can I enable filtering per mailbox / per module?
For most modules, yes. For antivirus, no.
+ Using Ninja Blade, can I protect against outbound email threats and can the established policies enforce actions to meet regulatory compliance?
With Ninja Blade, creating custom rules, you can block virtually any type of outbound email traffic, so depending on your level of compliance requirements this may very well be possible.
+ Are there educational discounts?
Check with your Rep or Reseller which discount level applies to your organization.
+ Can you handle dictionary mailbox DDOS by rejecting outright any e-mail not matching a legit mailbox in the Exchange environment?
Ninja Blade has built-in DDOS protection as well as a multitude of other sophisticated security features to discourage spammers and hackers, such as tarpitting. Consult our datasheets or speak to a specialist for full details.
+ What is the overhead that Ninja Blade is putting on my Exchange Server? How much CPU is it taking?
As a perimeter appliance, Ninja Blade puts negligible load on the Exchange Server. It will query the Active Directory. In general, you should see a decrease in server load as much of the processing is offloaded to Ninja Blade. The MTA will also cushion the traffic flow and cache both inbound and outbound traffic if there are internal or external bottlenecks.
+ How do I cost justify a product like this?
Easy! Recently, a Ferris Research report showed that it costs companies between US$50 and $100 a month per employee to deal with just spam protection, let alone full messaging security. (download the PDF that sits on that page) But even if this would be only half the cost, the price of Ninja Blade pays back for itself in just a few WEEKS. How about that for a fast ROI !
+ Which products are you competing with?
There are a variety of products out there, from entry-level boxes like Barracuda based on open-source software to high-end enterprise products from Secure Computing and others. We provide a superior value for money versus our competitors in providing a solid, enterprise-class appliance built using market-leading technologies. We don't leave your security to open source projects, but work with our technology partners and our own messaging security team to provide a best-in-class solution.
+ Who made your product? From where is it supported? Where are the developers?
Ninja Blade is and will continue to be designed, coded, and supported from the United States, but be sold world wide. Sunbelt maintains the core product and uses key technologies from Dell, Cloudmark, BitDefender and MessageSystems. Sunbelt can provide 24/7/365 support options in addition to your normal maintenance.
+ I have no time to spend half of my day weeding through quarantine boxes and find false positives. How do you solve this?
First off, the spam engines are constantly updated. Your users can be given their own allow and block list options so that they can indicate which people they want to receive email from or not. The vast majority of system admins let their end-users do some fine tuning of their email management themselves and users really like this way of working.
+ Will Ninja Blade work with Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 and other versions of Exchange?
Yes Ninja Blade will work with SBS 2003 Servers and all other flavors of Exchange.
